Update 8/22/04
Petey bloated this evening and we had to have him put to sleep.
He had been doing really well here and we had great hopes for him.
He was a
wonderful, sweet natured, affectionate boy who just wanted to please
people. None of his behavioral problems ever were an issue here and we
had finally gotten a handle on his health problems. He was eating well
and putting on weight. He had a very bright future. Bloat is an awful
disease, how and when it strikes makes no sense. It struck poor Petey
in his sleep and progressed so fast that we never really had a chance
to save him.
We are going to miss you a lot Petey, your happy, joyful personality was a blessing. Be well my friend.
Petey
just arrived. He has come to us from Mid Atlantic Great Dane Rescue
League's VA chapter. Here is what they had to say about him:
Petey is a 2 year old white deaf male with cropped
and standing ears. Petey is trained in American Sign Language and
knows sit, stay, come, good, other room, no, and the sign for his
name. He is a counter surfer when you are not home. He needs a
hearing, female dog companion, and a stay at home parent. Petey is a
real couch potato. He loves rubber bones and Nylabones. He suffers
from anxiety when his routine changes, although when he has a stable
routine he is extremely reliable. When his routine does change, Petey
will get an upset stomach, and if it is severe, will have accidents in
the house. He is loving and gentle and
needs a stable home environment. He would do best in a home with
children over the age of 10. Petey is wearing a gentle leader in this
photo, which is a type of collar.
Update 4/27/04 - We've had Petey for about 1 1/2 weeks now.
He has not shown us any of the behavioral problems we were warned
about. He is an easy going, pretty calm guy. Very loving and
affectionate. Wants to learn and be a good boy from what I can see. He
gets to whining a bit when you leave the room and wants to go with you.
He'll jump the kiddy gate to stay with me sometimes. He did fine in a
wire crate and has been fine with all the other dogs. In fact he loves
playing with them and even sleeping cuddled up with them. At first he
was not eating, but we felt he was holding out for goodies so we just
stuck to our feeding program. Now he is diving into his food and eating
it all. He does tend to be a tiny bit protective of his food with other
dogs, but not objectionably so. We really haven't seen any significant
problems with him. And he is such an affectionate guy. He is way
underweight and we hope he'll start to fatten up now that he is eating
regularly. We are going to work on his training, to teach him some
alternate signs that are a bit more useful, and to get him a little
more reliable.
