- Temperament
- Sky is a big happy doofus. She loves life and thinks everyone is on this earth just for her. She is an absolute doll.
Sky
came to us through another rescuer. She spent 5 months in a foster home
down in Southern California before we could arrange a transport up
here. She does have some separation issues but they have not been bad.
She is a happy go lucky girl and sort of a doofus. The typical clumsy,
happy, semi uncoordinated young Dane. She love to chew on bones or
nylabones. She is sort of high energy, but she will settle down with a
good bone. Given what all she went through this year, it is not
surprising that she gets very agitated if she thinks you are leaving
her. She loves car rides. We are working with her on not bolting
through doors. She shows some signs of abuse (or at least poor, abusive
training methods) and often will not come to you out of fear. With a
calm steady hand, she does finally relax and trust. She is a good sized
dog, on the tall side and very Dane like.
Sky is currently living with 10 other Danes. She is the new girl on the
block but has settled in and is doing just fine. She gets along with
all the other dogs. She behaves more like a puppy than an adult dog
still.
Update 8/21/07 - Sky has made huge strides about
coming when called. She no longer runs off or plays "catch me." She is
a very sweet affectionate dog who wants to make you happy and just be
with you. She is not pushy or demanding about it, but it really makes
her day if she can just hang out with you. She will gladly lay out on
the floor in the same room with you and fall asleep. of course if you
leave while she is asleep, she will race all over the house looking for
you when she wakes up, so we tend to wake her up if we are leaving the
room for any length of time. She is a bed bug, and will sleep in the
softest most comfy bed/couch/etc. she can find if she can't hang out
with you. She is moderately high energy and a bit of a play baby with
the other dogs. She doesn't realize her size and is sort of clumsy,
which makes for an interesting situation when she wants to play with a
smaller dog. But there isn't a mean bone in her body. She has had one
seizure since we got her. We do not know if she has had others in her
life or not. There was no report of any seizures before we got her, she
spent 5 months in foster before she found a ride up here to us, and the
foster did not report any seizure activity either. This may have been
an isolated incident or she may have infrequent seizures. We have had
several dogs in rescue that had a seizure once every 6 months to a
year. it does not affect them and if it is that infrequent there is not
reason to even put them on medication.
We will post additional photos of Sky as time goes by, so check
back often.

"He is my other eyes that can see above the
clouds; my other ears that hear above the winds. He is the part of me
that can reach out into the sea. He has told me a thousand times over
that I am his reason for being; by the way he rests against my leg; by
the way he thumps his tail at my smallest smile; by the way he shows
his hurt when I leave without taking him. (I think it makes him sick
with worry when he is not along to care for me.) When I am wrong, he is
delighted to forgive. When I am angry, he clowns to make me smile. When
I am happy, he is joy unbounded. When I am a fool, he ignores it. When
I succeed, he brags. Without him, I am only another man. With him, I am
all-powerful. He is loyalty itself. He has taught me the meaning of
devotion. With him, I know a secret comfort and a private peace. He has
brought me understanding where before I was ignorant. His head on my
knee can heal my human hurts. His presence by my side is protection
against my fears of dark and unknown things. He has promised to wait
for me... whenever... wherever - in case I need him. And I expect I
will - as I always have. He is just my dog." - Gene Hill
