2010 3rd Annual Northwest Deaf Dog Picnic

Tentative Itinerary

This is what we have planned, plans sometimes fall through, plus we are a pretty loose bunch that is open to changing the plans as the weekend evolves if folks want. So while these are the plans, the weekend may not follow the plans exactly. If you're into rigid schedules, and checking off "todo" lists, this probably isn't the venue for you.

Sat. June 12th - 2:00 PM to ??? - Open House at DDRI -
(RSVP)
BYOB if you want alcoholic beverages, everything else will be provided. Be sure to bring your bathing suits etc., if you want to hang out in the hot tub.

Sat. June 12th - 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM -
Ian Dunbar Video - TRAINING THE COMPANION DOG I - SOCIALIZATION & TRAINING
  • Teach your dog to be a well-mannered pet through socialization, communication, early obedience training (sit, down, stand), working with shy or aggressive dogs and understanding body language, beginning the recall, and preparing for a vet visit by becoming used to handling
Sat. June 12th - 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM - Turid Rugaas Video - CALMING SIGNALS - WHAT YOUR DOG TELLS YOU
  • Norwegian dog trainer Turid Rugaas is a noted expert on canine body language, notably “calming signals” which are signals dogs give other dogs and humans that denote stress. These are dogs’ attempt to defuse situations that otherwise might result in fights or aggression. The DVD shows footage of many calming signals, how dogs use them, and how you can use them to calm your dog. This is the DVD format and companion to the popular book, "On Talking Terms with Dogs." Note - this is not a professionally filmed DVD rather one done by dedicated amateur dog people; however, it does a good job of illustrating the canine body language subjects it addresses.

Sat. June 12th - 5:00 PM to ??? - Marc's Special Homemade Spaghetti Dinner

Sun. June 13th - 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM - Ian Dunbar Video - GIVE THEM A SCALPEL AND THEY WILL DISSECT A KISS - DOG TRAINING PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE
Video Followed by an open forum discussion of the video. This is a video for trainers, that discusses the issues trainers are facing as the field evolves. This is not a video for dog owners on how to train. That said, there is a lot to learn, even for dog owners, and it will help people learn more about training in general.
  • Veterinarian and animal behaviorist, Dr. Ian Dunbar enlightens, entertains, and challenges the dog training community about the development and current state of the pet dog training profession.  Founder of the largest professional association of dog trainers, APDT, Ian’s opinions on the issues that face and divide dog trainers should stimulate a lot of thinking and progress for the industry. Ian discusses recent rifts that developed among trainers using different methods, the importance of testing theory by using sound scientific methods, and his philosophy that training must be  efficient and effective for dog owners.
Sun. June 13th - 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM - Microchipping Clinic - Chips for sale $10 plus demos and instruction on how to insert chips.

Sun. June 13th - 2:00 PM till we drop -

There is space for camping at DDRI if anyone wants to pitch a tent. We do have one very rustic motorhome available with electric but no water (you'd have to come to the house for water/showers/etc.) and we have a barn available. Plus there are dog friendly hotels in Oakridge.

Oakridge Hotels/Motels
Tired Dog Ranch 541-782-2775 Two stick built cabins and a huge Yurt on 18 acres of Cascade beauty. Horses, goats, chickens, ducks, a peacock, dogs, and cats abound, including Xander a deaf Dane adopted from us. They also have some camping spaces with limited amenities. Ask for Amy Jo
Best Western Oakridge Inn 541-782-2212 I know they have rooms available for folks with pets. No size restrictions on animals, but there is an doggy deposit.
Oakridge Motel 541-782-2432 When I asked them, they said they prefer dogs to kids. No size restrictions, all they ask is that you bring a dog bed for the dogs to sleep on.
Arbor Inn Motel 541-782-2611 - couldn't get an answer
Cascade Motel 541-782-2489 - couldn't get an answer

"He is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog. You are his life, his love, his leader.
He will be yours, faithful and true, to the last beat of his heart.
You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion"
