- Temperament
- Handsome is an active dog, he tends to be hyper and can be skittish.
He can overreact out of fear which leads us to believe he was
mistreated in the past. He does have a bite history and is not good
with kids.
Handsome
came to us from a shelter in Texas. He was abandoned following a bite
incident with a 7 yr. old boy. The incident was provoked, and the child
had a history of provoking Handsome. The family was charged with abuse
for abandoning Handsome. He is a very sweet boy, but can be frightened
by some situations. In extreme situations, there is the possibility
that he can be a fear biter, but in a good home with proper care and
love, he will present absolutely no danger and will make a wonderful
companion. He tends not to be good with large male dogs, he has a touch
of "little dog syndrome" and tries to dominate them, leading to
confrontations. However, he is currently living with 23 other Danes and
is doing well, so this is not a huge issue. It is just something an
owner will need to be aware of, and we will be selective about his
placement and what other dogs he will be living with. Given his
history, we will not place him in a situation where there will be kids.
This all makes him sound so much worse than he really is. The shelter
that surrendered him to us would not have allowed him to leave if they
had concerns about him biting someone and we would not be considering
placement if we had concerns. However we do need to make potential
adopters aware of his special needs. Overall, he is a great dog, well
behaved, crate trained, and eager to please. He just wants someone to
love him, and to be able to love them back.
