Casper was what they were calling this sweet girl when
we got her (We renamed her after one of the people who saved her and got
her to us). A wonderful family saw her tied to a bike at a yard sale and
rescued her even though they couldn't keep her. She was filthy (they said
she was brown colored when they got her) and malnourished. She is still
skin and bones, and they say she's put on 20 lbs since they rescued her!
They found out about us from someone on the Deaf Dog list, and we arranged
to get her. She was in the Redding, CA area. She is supposed to be AKC registered
but the original owners wouldn't transfer the paperwork (they wanted to
sell the paperwork, not the dog, mind you, they couldn't care less about
her, but the paperwork was worth money to them). She was purchased originally
from a kennel back east somewhere and they didn't realize she was deaf.
When the figured it out, they tied her to a tree and pretty much ignored
her. She is very shy and afraid of people, right now she won't let anyone
but us (and kids) approach her, and even we have a hard time when she is
off leash. When I went to pick her up she hid under the coffee table nearly
the whole time I was there. She would stick out just her nose to get the
treats I was offering, but nothing else. And anytime someone moved she would
head for the furthest corner of the room and growl and bark.
She has no concept of people as friends yet really, though in just
the couple days we've had her she has made huge stride on this. Because
of this, her age, and how underweight she is, we will not be placing her
for several months at least. By the time she is ready for placement, all
these behavioral issues will be a thing of the past. Under it all she is
a very sweet loving girl, a typical Dane. We just need some time to find
that lost little Dane girl, and help her find her way back to the world.
We will post periodic updates on her here, and add more photos as
we take them. Despite the fact that she will not be available for a while,
people are welcome to keep tabs on her, or come see her, or even fill out an application
to adopt her (we expect to have a waiting list on her once folks find
out what a gem she is). She is likely to be a big dog, at just 8 months
she is already as tall as Delilah
and Gracie. She
is a long and lanky type though, so she will likely always look a bit on
the thin side like Connor.
Update 2/09/03
- Glenna is really starting to come out of her shell now. She is still
very timid with strangers (except kids, she just loves kids), but with us
she is becoming the typical loving, cuddly, trusting Dane. She is also putting
on weight. She was up to 97 lb. on her last visit to the vet. Glenna is
just an absolute sweetheart once you get to know her. |
