We lost Jammer today. He took
a severe turn for the worse over the last 24 hours and after discussing
all our options with our vet this afternoon, we all decided it was best
to let him go. Bottom line was he wasn't going to make it and he was
suffering, so we did the only thing left for us to do for him. I held
his head and we looked into each other's eyes and I kept telling him I
loved him until he was gone.
There are days I hate this job.

Comments
We
got Jammer when he was just 7 weeks old, well actually he
didn't get here until he was 8 weeks old. That was back in July and
Jammer has grown up a lot since then. You will see him in most shots
with his brother, Katz (the Katz N Jammer Kids), who came to us with Jammer. Both brothers were deaf,
and both
were simply amazing. These two were the sweetest, most affectionate and
loving dogs we have ever met. They were also smart and very well
behaved. They were reliably crate trained at 8 weeks! They would always
let you know when they had to go out. They were too good to be true.
Katz was the quiet dog, we called him "The Good Puppy", and
Jammer was the outgoing inquisitive one who was always getting into
something. We called him "The Bad Puppy." But the truth is these two
were the best two puppies we've ever met.
Update 5/4/09 - Well Jammer was placed back in
March, but he is coming back to us. His owners run a daycare in their
home and Jammer was just too protective for an environment with people
coming and going all day every day. He was great with the kids. His
problems were with the parents and other adults who came and went
during the day. Mostly he had issues with the men. His owners adore him
and were heartbroken about returning him. If it weren't for the fact
that they have so many people in and out of their home every day,
dropping off and picking up kids, they would have kept him. His
probelms weren't bad, though he did snap at a couple people. It was
just the wrong environment for him. He had never shown any of this sort
of behavior here, but he was still young, we do not have many visitors,
and we never have people coming and going without notice. In the right
home, Jammer will do just fine, though he's probably never going to be
great with strangers, given his protective nature.
Update 1/28/09 - Jammer has always had problems with eating things he shouldn't. He's
always had an appetite for soft things like bedding, upholstery,
pillows, and stuffy toys. We have been very careful about managing his
environment, especially since he came back to us from his first
placement. But this is one of those really tough things to manage. It
turns out that, despite our best efforts to keep things away from him,
he found some stuff to eat that he shouldn't have. He got a hold of one
of the puppy's rope toys, chewed off and swallowed the knotted end,
which passed into his intestines and got stuck. He required emergency
surgery to remove the rope toy (and a stuffed bunny head that was stuck
in his stomach for who knows how long, at least since before he came
back to us, as it isn't something we've ever had here). The vet bill
for this, even with our rescue discount, was over $1900. This last
year has been a tough one for everyone, and DDRI is no exception, so
money is really tight right now. Because of this, we are asking folks
to help with Jammer's emergency vet bill. We have created a ChipIn for
this purpose and people can donate using the ChipIn link below. Please
consider donating to Jammer's emergency vet fund. Every little bit helps.
We will post additional photos of Jammer as time goes by, so check
back often.
